3 Ingredient Mug Cake
Recipe by Clare
This is the kind of recipe you can whip up on a weeknight when the sweet cravings hit but you don’t want to deal with flour, baking powder, or piles of dishes. I also like to sneak in a few small pieces of dark chocolate into the batter before cooking, so you get melty little pockets in every bite.

Course Desserts
Cuisine American
- 1 egg
- 2 tbsp cocoa powder
- 2 tbsp maple syrup
- Optional: a few chunks of dark chocolate for extra gooeyness
Crack the egg into a small bowl or directly into your microwave safe mug.
Add cocoa powder and maple syrup. Stir well until smooth. (I found a fork is best)
If you’re adding dark chocolate chunks, fold them through the mixture.
Microwave for 45 seconds, check for doneness, and cook for another 15 seconds if needed. You'll know when it's done as as it all puffs up)
Optional Extras
You can add additional sides like thick yogurt, cream or fresh or frozen (defrosted) fruit.
Why These Ingredients Work (and Taste Amazing)
Egg – More than just a binder, eggs are a great source of protein, vitamins B12 and D, and healthy fats. They give the cake structure while keeping it tender.
Cocoa Powder – Packed with antioxidants, cocoa powder supports heart health and adds that deep, chocolatey flavour without added sugar.
Maple Syrup – A natural sweetener with minerals like manganese and zinc. It adds moisture, balances the bitterness of cocoa, and gives a hint of caramel-like richness.
Dark Chocolate (Optional) – Rich in antioxidants and healthy fats, dark chocolate also melts beautifully, turning each spoonful into pure decadence.
